Contractors Solutions Inc. - Asbestos Industry Glossary of Terms
ACTS: Asbestos Contractor Tracking System - Asbestos Demolition/Renovation and Asbestos Contractor Tracking System in some states is an EPA system.
ADI: Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI): The highest daily amount of a substance that may be consumed over a lifetime without adverse effects.
Asbestos Abatement: Procedures to control fiber release from asbestos-containing materials in a building or to remove them entirely, including removal, encapsulation, repair, enclosure, encasement, and operations and maintenance programs.
Alveoli: The plural of alveolus. The alveoli are tiny air sacs within the lungs where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place.
Asbestos: A natural material made up of tiny fibers which can lodge in the lungs and lead to cancer or scarring of the lungs. The cancer may be lung cancer or ( mesothelioma ), which is a cancer of the lining of the lungs or other internal organs. The scarring of the lungs is termed asbestosis. Exposure to asbestos usually occurs by breathing contaminated air in workplaces that make or use asbestos or in the air of buildings containing asbestos that are being torn down or renovated.
Asbestosis: A condition featuring scarring of the lungs caused by inhaled asbestos fibers. Asbestosis is irreversible. It tends to lead to COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), a progressive disorder that can be disabling or fatal.
Computerized tomography: Pictures of structures within the body created by a computer that takes the data from multiple X-ray images and turns them in pictures.
CT scan: Computerized tomography scan. Pictures of structures within the body created by a computer that takes the data from multiple X-ray images and turns them into pictures on a screen. CT stands for computerized tomography.
Environmental Protection Agency: The US government agency founded to "protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment--air, water, and land--upon which life depends." The Environmental Protection Agency is known as the EPA.
Exigent Hardship: A claim qualifies as an Exigent Hardship claim if it meets the Medical/Exposure criteria for Severe Asbestosis (Disease Level IV) or an asbestos-related malignancy (Disease Levels V-VIII), and the Asbestos PI Trust, in its sole discretion, determines that (a) the Claimant needs financial assistance on an immediate basis based on the Claimant's expenses and all sources of available income and (b) that there is a causal connection between the Claimant's dire financial condition and the Claimant's asbestos-related disease ("Exigent Hardship Claims"). The Trust considers all claims involving a Claimant who is living with a mesothelioma diagnosis an Exigent Claim and will process it accordingly.
Expedited Review (ER): This election is designed primarily to provide an expeditious, efficient and inexpensive method of liquidating all claims (except those involving Lung Cancer 2 (Disease Level VI) claims, and Foreign Claims where the claim can be easily verified as meeting presumptive medical and exposure criteria. The ER method thus provides a Claimant with a substantially less burdensome process for pursuing claims than does the Individual Review Process. Allowed ER claims receive a fixed dollar amount as specified in the TDP.
Hazardous Air Pollutants: Air pollutants which are not covered by ambient air quality standards but which, as defined in the Clean Air Act, may reasonably be expected to cause or contribute to irreversible illness or death. Such pollutants include asbestos, beryllium, mercury, benzene, coke oven emissions, radionuclides, and vinyl chloride
ILO: The acronym stands for International Labor Organization. For the Trust's purposes, it refers to the system for classifying chest x-rays. The system provides a simple method for evaluating chest x-rays with abnormalities caused by the inhalation of all types of dust, including asbestos. The ILO rating refers to the severity of fibrosis found by the chest x-ray, with 0/0 being a normal x-ray and 3/4 indicating the most severe interstitial disease.
Mesothelioma: Approximately 90% of mesothelioma cases have had recognized exposure to asbestos.A malignant tumor of the mesothelioma. The mesothelium is the thin lining on the surface of the body cavities and the organs that are contained within them. Most mesotheliomas begin as one or more nodules that progressively grow to form a solid coating of tumor surrounding the lung, abdominal organs, or heart.
Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA): This 1970 act addresses health and safety in the workplace. It created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (also OSHA) at the same time that the EPA was created. The OSHA law requires the new agency to promulgate standards such that "no employee will suffer material impairment of health or functional capacity even if ... [exposed] ... for the period of his working life." The OSHA law covers all industrial operations, including hazardous waste TSD facilities.
OSHA: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, an agency of the US government under the Department of Labor with the responsibility of ensuring safety at work and a healthful work environment.
Remediation-1: Cleanup or other methods used to remove or contain a toxic spill or hazardous material from a Superfund site; 2. For the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response program, abatement methods including evaluation, repair, enclosure, encapsulation, or removal of greater than 3 linear feet or square feet of asbestos-containing materials from a building.
Risk factor: Something that increases a person's chances of developing a disease.
