If the pipes are located in a cabinet or crawlspace: What If You Have A Frozen Pipe? During a very cold winter, frozen pipes are a common problem. Raise the house temperature to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Open the cabinet and blow the warmer house air on the pipe with a fan. Use a hair dryer or vacuum cleaner as a blower and direct it on the frozen area. Soak bath towels in boiling water and wrap them around the frozen pipe. Squirt hot, not boiling, water on the frozen area. Do not under any circumstances use an open flame. It is dangerous and can damage the pipes. If the water is not coming from the faucet, shut off the main cold water valve entering the house. The reason for shutting off the water is that a frozen pipe can split and the ice is the only thing stopping the water from flooding your basement or your home. Once you or your plumbing contractor fees that the pipe has thawed, turn the main valve on and check for leaks. If leeks are observed, shut off the valve again and call your plumbing contractor. Never use an open flame to attempt to thaw an frozen pipe.
