The Thru-Wall Air Conditioner

The installation of an in-wall air-conditioning unit will require an opening through the exterior wall of your house. Selecting the right location is very important.   Concerns for the location include: a section of wall that is free of pipes, wires, structure supports, etc. For installations that involve cutting through concrete, brick or stone must be done by experienced contractors. The opening required for an in-wall unit must follow the manufacturer's directions that accompany the air conditioner. In most cases a thru-wall a/c unit placed in a solid wall will require a support header (a horizontal beam that picks up loads from studs that are cut short and carries them to the sides of the opening).  It's also important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for setting the unit slightly out of level to drain condensation away.
A separate power supply circuit is required in most cases.  The location of the receptacle should be near the unit and some times a good idea is to place it on opposite to take up slack in the cord.    Bundling up the cord slack could cause an electrical hazard.
